Sizing and fit

Striking is what produces the crisp shoulders on lettering and the depth in the background texture; casting softens both, and printing eliminates them entirely.

Struck plates go through cleaning, plating and hand-polishing as separate stages. The polishing is deliberately manual — buffing wheels round over the sharp edges of the relief, so the high points are brought up by hand and the recesses are left alone.

The strap is cut from full-grain hide, skived at the edges so it lies flat, and stitched rather than glued. Full-grain keeps the outer layer of the hide intact, which is what lets it develop a patina instead of flaking. The plates are then mounted through the strap with hardware rated to carry their weight — on a full-size belt that is a meaningful load, and it is where cheap builds fail first.

What the price reflects
